We love these tight 'n' cheeky ceramics by Louise Madzia
Have you stumbled across the super playful clay work of UK ceramicist Louise Madzia yet? If the answer is ‘nah’, today is most definitely your lucky day! Working out of her garden studio in Buckinghamshire, she builds all of her hand-coiled earthenware. This is followed by a firing session, and she then glazes each piece by hand. When they emerge from the kiln the final time, they are sleek, clean pots made unique by her tight, often cheeky line work.
Louise was studying illustration at Kingston when she started taking casual weekly ceramics classes on a...
The Smudge: a new monthly riso newspaper talking current issues and activism
We’re all for the little guys stepping up and making a difference. Calling out the crap, working towards brighter futures and bigger things all while bringing people together. US-based illustrators Clay Hickson an Liana Jegers are doing just that with their new monthly print newspaper, The Smudge. We’ve featured Clay before for his work on his independent publisher, Tan & Loose, so of course we jumped at the news of this newest print endeavour.
Clay and Liana were inspired to make The Smudge as a reaction to the recent political turmoil in the...
Soft tones, pastel hues and hard edges with US artist Jesse Moretti
Strong geometric shapes softened with air-brushed fills. Flowing wavy lines and sharp zig zags cutting across expanses of open space in soft tones and pastel hues reminiscent of Miami Beach. Flat forms floating in dimensional spaces. Elaborately framed 2D pieces turn the flat into sculpural. Yep. Jesse Moretti’s work is full of delightful visual contrasts and contradictions.
Born in Miami and based in New York, Jesse is a Cranbrook MFA graduate whose work straddles the digital and traditional worlds in her processes. There are a combination of steps involved to create her sharp, vibrant, abstract...
Enjoying Taku Bannai's minimal, soothing collaged illustrations
Taku Bannai is a Japanese artist who has captivated our attention with his soul-soothing collaged illustrations. Born in Tokyo, Taku graduated from the Tama Art University where he studied graphic design. Since graduating, he has worked as an illustrator for various design and advertising agencies, lending his recognisable style of human subjects in minimal, pastel-hued environments.
Using coloured paper, Taku creates his illustrations by making paper cuts and arranging them into simple figures and scenes. The textural, tactile surface of the paper offers an interesting and refreshing take on conventional illustration techniques. He uses large,...
Ann Pajuväli's abstractions of the everyday
Ann Pajuväli is a young artist from Estonia. She uses an awesome combination of digital and traditional mediums to create her drawings. We love her use of blocky, spattered textures and 80’s style patterns in pastels and brights. Looking at her work is kind of like daydreaming about abstract comics meeting the Memphis design group for a milkshake.
Ann graduated from the Estonian Academy of Arts with a degree in printmaking and is now working through her Masters. Over the last two years, she’s delved into the comics world, working from an angle which is...
