Dropping into New York-based illustrator Lil Kool's psychedelic neighbourhoods

Dropping into New York-based illustrator Lil Kool's psychedelic neighbourhoods

Lil Kool is a New York-based illustrator who builds unique worlds with his pencils, and rustles up some serious eccentric 90’s kid nostalgia in the process. Combining clean, black lines and chunky shapes with flattened, visceral colours, dropping into Lil Kool’s universe is kind of how we’d imagine our favourite childhood cartoon characters on LSD. His wacky aesthetic sensibility turns drab suburbia scenes into hallucinogenic neighbourhoods, classically lurid 80’s interiors into super satisfying, flat pastel vignettes and innocent protagonists from 90’s cartoons into the creepiest of foes.

Lil Kool (probably the best pseudonym ever and the only...

Celebrating the fearlessly experimental and iconic textiles of Anni Albers

Celebrating the fearlessly experimental and iconic textiles of Anni Albers

Anni Albers is undeniably the most influential and best known textile designer of the 20th century. Even if you don’t know her name, you’ve definitely seen her work and its influence before and we’d be kidding ourselves if we couldn’t admit that she has inspired some of the sock designs in our own collection. Graphic, bright and iconic, Anni’s work was fearlessly experimental and groundbreaking.

She was born in 1899 in Berlin, with a rebellious spirit that led her to stray from the conventionally restrictive expectations for women of her time. In her late teens she...

Traditional meets contemporary with Marrakech-based Belgian textile label LRNCE

Traditional meets contemporary with Marrakech-based Belgian textile label LRNCE

Terracotta vases, leather sandals, suede and ceramics. Hand-woven kimonos and rugs in earthy colour-ways, abstract line drawings embroidered on soft blankets. Ultramarine blues against powdery pinks and shades of camel, all nestled amongst the dusty dunes and never-ending blue sky. Sounds like we’re describing a holiday in Morocco, but we’re actually just talking about the beautiful goods produced by Belgian fashion label, LRNCE.

Based in Marrakech, LRNCE is a label that is inspired by the cults, rituals, symbols and colours of the desert. Laurence Leenaert founded the brand in 2013, initially focusing on bags from...

Obsessing over David Brandon Geeting's use of hard light and bright colour

Obsessing over David Brandon Geeting's use of hard light and bright colour

David Brandon Geeting is an Odd Pears favourite from way, way back. His style is exciting, unexpected and memorable, and with each new project of his that we stumble across, the love for his work only grows. Based in New York, David works in the realms of fashion and advertising, producing award winning imagery for big name clients. Widely sought after for his clever, almost-hyper-real still life images, his combination of juxtaposing clashing imagery and compelling details makes his work a joy to re-discover time and time again.

David’s beginnings in photography are humble. Having always been...

Sydney based artist and designer Evi O's abstract paintings are beautiful and evocative

Sydney based artist and designer Evi O's abstract paintings are beautiful and evocative

Looking at Sydney-based artist Evi O’s work is like gazing into a time machine. It’s hard to point to a time and place, so sophisticated and timeless is her work in style and steez. We see little peeks of 60’s abstraction, pop art and head nods towards mid-century design, but mostly we see Evi’s keen eye for beautiful shapes and striking colour palettes. Her paintings explore ideas of space, location and the people in her life, filtered down to abstract, evocative forms.

Evi also happens to be a very talented graphic designer, an occupation that has...
