Amok Island is a Fremantle-based multi-disciplinary artist currently blowing our minds with his large-scale, geometric renderings of Australian native flora and fauna.
Originally from The Netherlands, Amok’s work drips with a bold, minimal, graphic design-like sensibility which he uses to refine and simplify. He applies his large, flat fields of colour and geometric shapes with sharp precision and accuracy to a myriad of surfaces; from small canvases in a gallery space to large-scale city walls, and monolithic silos in the desert.
Amok’s work is informed by his curiosity and fascinations with nature and our human relationships to the natural world. From wildflowers, mushrooms and marsupials to pelicans, seahorses and crabs, the subjects of his paintings come about by his own self-driven research and explorations in nature. He works from his own reference photos of these creatures, taking hikes and scuba trips often to gain a stronger understanding of his subjects. Exploration and conservation are strong themes in Amok’s work and, as he writes on his website, if he weren’t an artist he would be a biologist.
