Bright, cheerful retro-style illustrations from Lan Truong

Lan Truong creates incredibly calming and beautiful still life drawings. She’s an illustrator and graphic designer based in Portland, Oregon, drawing for clients and for fun. With a focus on geometry, lines and minimal forms, her work is alluring in its simplicity. Taking inspiration from everyday life, Lan draws her scenes and pares back until they’re crisp, clean images with a touch of cheeky humour.

Lan’s got a few different styles under her belt, varying from solid, textural fills with halftones and simple, delicate linework, to crispy ink-like brushwork with pops of gradient colour. We’re in love with her most recent journey into strong black line work with bright colour palettes. Alternating between flat fills and halftone, Lan jettisons us right back to the 70’s with these grainy, psychedelic visions. Creating vignettes made up of everyday objects, and layered with winding vines and florals, the result is a positively trippy journey that reminds us of something straight out of The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine

Her drawings remind us of the classic records you might find in your parents’ garage or old children’s encyclopaedia illustrations from childhood. Familiarity of the subject matter combined with the retro aesthetic has us feeling reminiscent for simpler times. If her work wasn’t so poppy and fun, we might just find ourselves getting a bit misty eyed.
