We first discovered LA based photographer Hobbes Ginsberg on Tumblr, stumbling across her beautiful, raw and enigmatic self portraits. Self described “wannabe (sea)punk, new wave earnest white girl and at least a 7/10”, Hobbes’ photos are candid, mythical, and ask important questions: “Who am I? Why am i here? Do u love me bb?”
Hobbes calls her self portraits “selfies”. We think we can speak for most when we say we’re all pretty familiar with the selfy. Instead of an iPhone, Hobbes uses a tripod and Nikon d5100 and explores her identity, fashion sense and experimentations of self. Her shooting style is instantly recognisable; hyper with saturated colours and a mish-mash clashing of textures and patterns. The result is a celebration of youth, growth and fun.
Moving on from selfies, Hobbes Ginsberg also shoots portraits. Inspired by renaissance paintings and classic religious imagery, Hobbes applies this to her subjects and set up and creates a sense of elevation in her protagonists. Kids eating Krispy Kremes, drinking soda, pose in a curated, hyper colour space that they totally own and sit like royalty. It’s a message of self love and positivity, being comfortable in your skin and being ok with who you are in whatever phase of life you’re in. Awkward, agitated, vulnerable or emotional.
Hobbes has recently embarked on shooting still lifes too, which we’re pretty excited about. Using her incredible photo style that’s been developed through shooting portraits and applying it to a still life. Lots and lots of colour, mixing the beautiful with the ugly and making it lots and lots of fun. We are so down to see what Hobbes is up to next.
